BACKGROUND & CONTEXT
The ‘Mtaa Compe’ is an art challenge for independent artists who tell stories in and from the grassroots. The first edition held in July 2020 focused on the theme of Gender Based Violence. It featured the art forms of film, photography and spoken word. Stories have the power to inspire people and communities to solve the biggest of problems facing them. Mtaa Compe will seek to curate the most important stories – unique and interesting stories that are visually distinctive, entertaining, informational and highlighting real stories of real people.
This is an exclusive event that challenges the creativity of the artist, making them realize their passion and give them a chance to win amazing prizes and have their art exhibited or screened at a premier event.
This is a one-month artistic challenge for the artist to produce a piece of art – Film, photo story or spoken word.
The Challenge is a themed competition. Theme for the second edition is Climate Justice. Artists will be required to write, shoot and edit a film, a photo story or a poem.
Afrikans have been the focal point in the Climate Justice debate. Stories told have mainly featured Afrikans as victims and White people as perpetrators. Yet, while these stories have been told, the problem persists. What have we been missing in this story? What new perspective or angle do we need on this issue to move the needle towards a more just and peaceful world.
The competition will award the winners with cash prizes or equipment of cash equivalent as follows:
Winner – KES 60,000 First run up – KES 40,000 Second run up – KES 25,000
